It’s springtime and the weather is starting to get warmer. Here in Arizona it’s the perfect time to get outside and be active before it starts to get too hot. Let’s Move is a great resource to find new ways to get outside and be active, especially as a family.
Did you know that children need at least 60 minutes of play every day?
Or that 8 to 18-year olds spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using entertainment media? This includes TV, computers, video games and cell phones.
What can you do?
Get outside more! Find a trail or park nearby and take your family on a nature walk.
Ride your bikes together as a family. Whether you bike to school or bike to lunch on the weekends, make an effort to get your 60 minutes of exercise in every day.
If you don’t have a pool, find a local YMCA that has one or a public pool that you and your child can visit.
If you’re competitive, sign your family up for the Presidents Challenge and see who can win the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award first. Don’t worry, adults can compete too!
Most importantly, make sure you stay hydrated. Bring water and drink it often. Bring healthy snacks too. You need to keep your energy up if you’re going to be active! Don’t forget to always wear sunscreen and protective clothing. The last thing you need while moving outdoors is a sunburn to ruin a good time.
